there are some things i just don't get about my library. one of the big things? part of the process for 'acquiring' or providing access to 'open access' or no-fee materials is...contacting the person responsible for the site & getting written notice from them that a license isn't required. (that's right - it's not enough that they're just putting it out there...our legal counsel needs to know that they're not going to sue us for LINKING TO THE SITE.)
grr. we're not even going to get into the whole issue of gov't docs in the catalog - we add hundreds of links every month, due to our marcive tape load. is that addressed by this policy? of course not. can you say, loophole?
i think our contracts librarian needs to retire - she doesn't seem to be up on some of the really important issues that are facing us. maybe she just wants to ensure that she'll be needed during these times of budget cuts, ha ha.
anyway. today was quite the day...i've finally decided that i really don't relate to most of my co-librarians. i guess i'm just coming from a different perspective...and oh yeah, i try to keep up with developments in the field. and...maybe it's just because i didn't really like librarians when i was in school, so i don't feel the need to force undergrads into the building. hmm.
a bit of rambling, sorry. but more & more i do feel a bit isolated from a lot of the more 'traditional' librarians - and i truly wonder where they've been in the past few years. (we're finally going to be cutting serials - much overdue for some of our accounts - and people are acting like it's the end of the world! yeesh. i have no patience for that.)
that's all the venting i have time for right now - i need to start working on another position description (someone to help me w/digital stuff) and, of course, finish the silly item selection!
